Confidence requires an understanding of ones flaws and a personal method in which to fix them.
In September 2019, I was blessed with the opportunity to coach the "Magic" team for the Lewis F.Cole Middle School basketball rec program. As a child you never forget your basketball coach and I felt honored to be given the responsibility of teaching young children the game of basketball. There were many types of children ranging in all skill levels. Some played basketball regularly, and some were just learning to dribble a basketball. I knew that after I was done with the season, it did not matter if we won or lost: the kids were going to be better, learn to depend on each other as a team, and most importantly, be more in tune with themselves. As time went on, the parents became vocal of the positive changes they saw in there children. Confidence is an important tool to carry throughout life, and the fact that their children's confidence was growing unveiled what they were learning went beyond the basketball court. For children to be honest with their flaws instead of turning their backs to them is pivotal to their upbringing. I consistently encouraged them to speak up and tell fellow teammates a problem they may have had with them. To not be fearful of asking why did we loose, even if the reason why we lost is partly because of them. To see a child muster up the courage to respectfully criticize their teammates and most importantly themselves was very satisfying to me and I'm sure for them and their parents. Schools are not responsible for teaching a child how to have presence, and through basketball I hope to do just that.
"Coach, can I ask you a question. can you dunk?"
The answer to your question is yes, I can dunk :). Hello my name is Wilmer Abreu. I am a happily married father of three. I spend most of my days banging away at a keyboard, coding web applications for large companies and for my own personal endeavors. Coding is a personal passion of mine and I am lucky to also have it be my profession. I love teaching others to code and hope to one day open up my own web development camp to teach anyone willing to learn. I love playing basketball and most of all boxing. I believe it is important to be well balanced physically and mentally and I strive to be on both ends. I thank you for your interest in Ithacab-ball basketball program and can assure you there are only but great things to come. Thank you.
